"Miss Isomoto" - We will miss her. Over 38 years, Sandra Jean Isomoto passionately shared her knowledge and love of learning to those around her. I thank her for introducing this young, Spanish-speaking child to this country. She gave me a solid educational foundation but more than this, she extended her caring hand to me and my family. I was fortunate to have been a student in her classroom for 1st and 2nd grades at Euclid Avenue Elementary School in Boyle Heights. In Miss Isomoto's classroom, learning was fun and exciting. She was the kind of teacher that would fund-raise for field trips so that her students had the opportunity to explore and experience new things. To this day, some of my favorite childhood memories include our class visits to the San Diego Zoo and Catalina Island.
This district has many great teachers and Sandy Isomoto is certainly one of them. She was a remarkable woman. Along with teaching the foundations of education, she taught courage and critical thinking. She taught kindness and sharing. Most of all, she taught people about connecting with each other. Miss Isomoto was dedicated to her students and knew it was important for parents to be involved in their children's education. As I reflect on her impact on my life, I remember how she made it a point to meet my mother and make her feel welcomed at my school so many years ago. She encouraged my mother's involvement in my education and I know that has been a critical source of support for me.
As a School Board Member, I make decisions that affect students, teachers, and entire school communities. I often find myself reminiscing on
those days at Euclid Avenue School and looking for the ingredients that made the difference in my life. Miss Isomoto made a difference in my
life and in the lives of many others. She has played an important role in my understanding of the work of teachers, the positive experiences
of students and the power of one person in changing the life of another. She will always serve as an inspiration and role model. Miss Isomoto
lived a life dedicated to learning, teaching, growing and giving. It is with sadness of her passing, with love and great gratitude for the
opportunity to have been her student that I remember her this 11th day of February 2003. Miss Isomoto was loved very much and she will be
greatly missed.
